Re-Introduction Project

The Need for a Spix’s Macaw Re-Introduction Project

The culmination of the race to save the Spix’s Macaw is the physical Spix’s Macaw Re-Introduction Project facility and five years of operating expenses for captive breeding and reintroductions into the wild.

The reintroduction of the Spix’s Macaw into the wild is the center piece of the official circular published into law by the Brazilian Government – “The Spix’s Macaw Action Plan”

The Holders have invested several million dollars US into their respective captive breeding centers in Qatar and Germany with the goal of transferring birds to the in situ Spix’s Macaw Re-Introduction Project facility.

In addition, the Holders have gathered all available captive Spix’s Macaws for inclusion into the breeding program. The Holders’ annual donation is in the form of funding the necessary research and breeding facilities in Germany and Qatar which will provide the offspring each year to populate the reintroduction facility in Brazil.

Objectives Overview

To create a breeding and reintroduction facility at the Spix’s Macaw Preserve on the 6,000 acre (2,400 ha) protected area now owned and managed by the Spix’s project partners for the ultimate reintroduction of the Spix’s Macaw.

Releasing at least 10-20 Spix's Macaws per year with continued reintroduction releases over the five year budgeted period.
