About

The Spix’s Macaw Association is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, not for profit, organization specifically organized by Parrots International, The Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots, Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation and the Jurong Bird Park as a multinational organization to bring the Spix’s Macaw back from extinction in the wild.

The Spix’s Macaw Association is responsible for land purchase; advising land use policy; design and construction of the Spix’s Macaw Breeding and Reintroduction Facility; operation of the Spix’s Macaw Breeding and Reintroduction Facility; managing the propagation of captive Spix’s Macaws at the facility; and the reintroduction of Spix’s Macaws into their historical habitat.

The Spix’s Macaw Association founding members signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement (TCA), with the Minister of the Environment at the Capital Offices in July, 2016. The TCA specifically addresses the agreement between the Brazilian Government and the Spix’s Macaw Association founders to create, fund, and manage the project culminating with annual reintroductions of the Critically Endangered/Extinct in the Wild Spix’s Macaw.
The TCA also states that the Brazilian Government offices of the Minister of the Environment; ICMBio and CEMAVE approve and support the Spix’s Macaw Association and the Association’s Spix’s Macaw De-Extinction Project.

The Spix’s Macaws to be located at the facility for breeding and reintroduction are donated by two Spix’s Macaw Association members, ACTP and AWWP. In addition all Spix’s Macaws held by the Brazilian Government will be incorporated into the project. Together these organizations (ACTP and AWWP) and the Brazilian Government hold all Spix’s Macaws in captivity.
